Genesis 2:4b-15 – Translation: Ted Witham
At the time when the Lord God made the universe, 5 all the bush land was not yet on the earth, and all the green plants had not yet sprouted as the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth, nor was there any human toiler to till the soil. 6 Only groundwater rose from the earth to water all the earth’s surface. 7 The Lord God fashioned the man out of the dry dust of the earth and breathed life into his nostrils and the man became a living creature. 8 The Lord God then planted a garden in Eden in the east, and he put in it the man he had fashioned. 9 The Lord God caused to spring from the soil every tree desirable to look at and good for eating, with the tree of life in the middle of the garden with the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 The river went out from Eden to water the garden and from there it divided and became four streams.
11 The first is called Pishon, and it goes around the land of Havilah where there is gold. 12 The gold of this land is fine. In it is also found resins and precious stones.
13 The second river is called Gihon, and it goes around the land of Cush.
14 The third river is called Tigris. It flows to the east of Asshur. The fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 The Lord God then took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and look after it.
